About Jay

Greetings! I’m a Denver-based writer and editor who has traveled from my home state of New Hampshire to places like Montana, Chicago, Uganda, New Mexico, Colorado, and beyond in pursuit of compelling stories. Passionate about non-fiction storytelling, I’ve worked throughout my career to craft sharp narratives and share them with diverse audiences.

In my role at the LOR Foundation, I write, edit, and assign stories about rural issues and help connect western communities with innovative solutions.

Previously, I was the digital associate editor at 5280 magazine, Denver’s award-winning city mag. (In 2018 and 2020, 5280 won the General Excellence honor at the City Regional Magazine Awards; in 2020, 5280.com, the website on which I worked daily for more than three years, won the online excellence award at CRMAs.)

My work has appeared in a variety of places, including Outside Magazine, where I worked as an editorial fellow and continued to write and fact-check as a freelancer. My writing has also been published by the Denver Post, High Country News, the New Hampshire Union Leader, and the Helena Independent Record in addition to other outlets. My feature story “Race to the Bottom,” which chronicled Colorado’s 2020 U.S. Senate race, won first prize for politics feature at the Society of Professional Journalists’ Top of the Rockies awards.

In 2016, I earned a Master’s degree from Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism; I am also a proud graduate of Carroll College in Helena, Montana (class of ’15), where I studied English and political science and began a decade-long journey in the Mountain West.

As a reporter I have covered a breadth of topics including city and state politics, religion, education, natural resources, infrastructure, and adventure sports. I’ve written about very large mountains, tense news events, and even gas station hot dogs.  As an editor I am experienced forging digital strategy, managing social media accounts, and supervising freelance writers, photographers, and videographers. In my free time I enjoy skiing, baseball, fishing badly, and lately restoring a battered sail boat.
